Sound Mind Investing by Austin PryorSound Mind Investing
Author: Austin Pryor

Because of its straightforward and beginner-friendly style, this is a great resource for the novice investor or someone who wants to get their financial house in order. The book, which contains many helpful examples and illustrations, approaches personal finances from a biblical perspective.

Pryor begins with the foundation of a budget or “spending plan” and creating a cash flow surplus, then discusses how to handle credit card and mortgage debt. The remainder of the book focuses on the basics of investing, how to build a portfolio that is right for you, and saving for retirement.

Asset Allocation by Roger Gibson Asset Allocation: Balancing Financial Risk
Author: Roger Gibson

From the book: “As financial commentators fill the airwaves with warnings and advice, and coworkers gather around computer screens to track hot stocks, investors find it increasingly difficult to stick with proven, orderly investment strategies. But in the updated third edition of his classic Asset Allocation, Roger Gibson reminds us that choosing a sensible, proven asset allocation strategy--concerned more with the optimal mix of investment classes than with today's hot stock picks--is exactly what investors must do to remain sane and successful.”

“Less concerned with how investments perform individually than how they perform as a group, it explains how to assemble a long-term portfolio that will actually outperform its parts--while minimizing overall risks--no matter what the market environment.”

Our thoughts: We strongly agree that asset allocation is the key determinant of long-term returns in your portfolio. This really is a must-read book for investors who seek long-term success.

The Four Pillars of Investing by William BernsteinThe Four Pillars of Investing
Author: William Bernstein

From the book: “From the essential soundness of classic portfolio theory through the inherent wisdom of investing in multiple asset classes, The Four Pillars of Investing lays out the four essential topics that every investor must master--the relationship of risk and reward, the history of the market, the psychology of the investor and the market, and the folly of taking financial advice from investment salespeople. It pulls back the curtain to reveal what really goes on in today's financial industry as it outlines a simple program for building wealth while controlling risk.”

Our thoughts: This is one of the most well-written books on the fundamental concepts of investing. While we do not entirely agree with all of Bernstein’s opinions related to modern portfolio theory, this book is still an excellent resource for becoming a more educated investor.

Mutual Funds Reports

A vast majority of the quarterly and annual reports sent by mutual funds to their shareholders are probably never read. However, they often not only help investors better understand the people who manage the funds but are educational as well. Here are links to the commentaries of some fund managers whom we hold in high regard:
